How to get involved
Thursday, 11 April 2013 10:03

Human rights defenders suffered a significant setback when States created the intergovernmental process on treaty body strengthening, as unlike the Dublin Process, it did not provide adequately for their participation.

However, It remains important that the intergovernmental process is informed by NGOs who have experience of working with the treaty bodies and we encourage the widest base of NGOs to engage with these consultations, even if those experiences do not appear immediately to relate to the big reform issues. There are several different ways to get involved. Please see the schedule of relevant meetings below for reference.

Observing the State consultations

The State consultations and informal-informals are open to NGOs for observation (not participation). These meetings are held at the UN in New York. As relevant meeting dates approach, check the daily UN Journal for times and locations.

Participating in the NGO hearings

No further NGO hearings have been scheduled at this time. In order to stay up to date, you can subscribe to email updates from the Civil Society Section.  If further hearings are held, please note that you must register in order to participate in the hearing, whether your NGO has ECOSOC status or not. As the date approaches, check the daily UN Journal for times and locations.

It may be possible to provide video-conferencing to other locations around the world. If this is of interest to your organization, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

If you are not able to participate in the hearing you may also have another NGO read a statement on your behalf.

Making written submissions to the co-facilitators

You may make written submissions to the co-facilitators of the process: Mr Thorvardur Atli Thorsson This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Organising side events

NGOs are able to organise side events at the UN, as long as these are co-sponsored by States.
