In June 2012, ISHR co-organised a seminar on 'Human Rights Defenders and Peaceful Protests' together with the ministries of foreign affairs of Norway and Switzerland.

The seminar aimed to take stock of recommendations issued by UN and regional special rapporteurs on human rights defenders in the context of peaceful protests; to assess the impact of recommendations put forward in cooperation with Governments and civil society representatives; and to coordinate the implementation and follow-up of related mechanisms.

Held in Oslo, the event brought together the UN Special Rapporteurs on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and the situation of human rights defenders; the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights; civil society representatives from all continents; representatives from international and regional NGOs with a particular focus on defenders issues; representatives of national human rights institutions; and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

A statement was issued by the African Commission's Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders and the UN Special Rapporteurs who were present at the seminar. A news release was also issued by OHCHR to accompany the statement.
