The statement on human rights, sexual orientation gender identity delivered by Argentina (on behalf of 66 cross-regional co-sponsors) in the General Assembly on 18 December 2008, marked the first time this principal organ of the UN substantively addressed this issue. The statement elicited a hostile response from the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), many African States and the Holy See, and prompted Syria (on behalf of 57 co-sponsors) to deliver a strongly-worded counter statement. For more information, about these statements, please refer to the chapter on the General Assembly in ISHR's Human Rights Monitor.
