(Geneva, 16 September 2013) - In a written statement to the UN Human Rights Council, Austria has endorsed key ISHR proposals to strengthen the legal and practical protection of human rights defenders.
The Austrian statement calls on the Council to consider a range of recommendations made by an international expert conference, the Vienna+20 conference, to advance the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.
Key ISHR proposals, endorsed by the expert conference and now being put on the agenda of the Council, include calls for States and the UN to:
  • Improve the protection of human rights defenders against undue interference and reprisals, including ensuring their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly and their access to funding.
  • Establish a UN-wide focal point in order to respond to reprisals against human rights defenders.
  • Develop a model national law on the protection of human rights defenders.
