4th Session of the Advisory Committee to take place 25 - 29 January
Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:11

The Human Rights Council Advisory Committee (the Committee) will hold its 4th session from 25 to 29 January 2010 in Geneva at Palais des Nations room XX. It will address issues stemming from Human Rights Council (the Council) resolutions on human rights education and training, the right to food, human rights of women, promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, missing persons, human rights of persons with disabilities, elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members, and human rights and international solidarity. The provisional agenda and annotations are available for download.

Of particular interest will be the continued discussion on a draft declaration on human rights education and training which is due to be considered by the Council at its 13th session in March 2010. The initiative is notable for the steady progress that has been made on the draft, including substantive NGO and civil society participation, since it was mandated by the Council in September 2007. A draft of the declaration is currently available on the Advisory Committee website. During its high-level segment at the upcoming 13th session, the Council intends to hold a ‘high-level discussion’ on the draft declaration.

The Committee will also examine two new priorities, including a comprehensive working paper on the ‘human rights of the older person’ as prepared by Committee member Ms Chinsung Chung. Along with the right of peoples to peace, this report represents apparent efforts by the Committee to fully use its advisory role to the Council and take on more independent initiatives. For more information on previous sessions of the Advisory Committee, check here.
