On 13 October 2009, 16 members of the Human Rights Council requested the holding of a special session on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The special session, the Council's 12th, will take place on Thursday 15 October in the afternoon and will continue on Friday 16 October. It is expected to focus on recent events in Gaza and to consider the draft resolution on follow-up to the 'Goldstone report', which was deferred at the 12th regular session that concluded less than two weeks ago.

The Goldstone report was submitted to the Council at its recent session by the independent fact finding mission, headed by Justice Richard Goldstone, to investigate violations of human rights and international humanitarian law committed by all sides to the Gaza conflict that took place in late 2008 and early 2009. The fact finding mission was mandated by the Council at its 9th special session.

In related developments, the UN Security Council is also expected to debate the Goldstone report this week at an open debate on the Middle East on 14 October. For more information on this, please see the Security Council Report.

ISHR will report on the discussions and outcome of the special session.
