ISHR's Activities at the ACHPR
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 10:14

ISHR follows two main objectives while carrying out its activities at the African Commission for Human and People’s Rights:

  • To ensure that the protection of the rights of human rights defenders remains a priority in the agenda of the ACHPR and is treated as an issue of relevance across the African system for the protection of human rights, especially at the ACHPR.
  • To strengthen the complementarity between the international and regional systems for the protection of human rights.

In order to carry out these objectives, ISHR encourages and facilitates exchanges between NGOs and the ACHPR, in particular with the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders. It is important for ISHR that NGOs are able to speak for themselves and express their concerns using available and appropriate human rights mechanisms. By contributing to the preparation of the NGO Forum (link to new section not yet available), ISHR intends to facilitate dialogue between NGOs, on the one hand, and between the ACHPR and the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, on the other.

With the help of its declarations, ISHR has drawn the ACHPR’s attention to a number of issues concerning the protection of the rights of human rights defenders.

To read the declarations made by ISHR in French at the 47th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR, please view the corresponding article in our francophone section.
